開學第一天，在湖北恩施土家族苗族自治州的大山裡，只有一位老師和一名學生的恩施市龍鳳鎮大龍潭村杉樹灣教學點和其他學校一樣迎來新學期，6歲新生劉欣怡在這所空曠的學校開始了一年級的學習生活。

根據中新網報導，隨著附近村子進城務工的年輕人增多，子女隨父母進城上學，這所學校的學生越來越少。從2008年起，這所學校的學生不到10人，從教36年、53歲的謝世魁老師獨自承擔起所有的教學任務，一直堅守到今天。
