利比亞首都的黎波里國際機場的11架商用飛機失蹤，美國官員擔心被伊斯蘭武裝分子偷走，他們可能將藉此對該地區發動另一場9·11恐怖襲擊。

東江河畔網據英國《每日郵報》報導，這11架飛機屬於利比亞兩家國有航空公司，在上個月武裝組織『利比亞黎明』占領的黎波里國際機場之後失蹤。摩洛哥軍事專家麥考伊稱，飛機已經被另一個伊斯蘭組織『蒙面旅』接管，該組織就是兩年前襲擊美國駐班加西領事館的主謀。麥考伊說，有『可靠情報』顯示，『蒙面旅』『正密謀使用飛機對馬格里布國家發動襲擊』，就在9月11日當天。

反恐專家戈爾卡告訴《華盛頓自由燈塔》，恐怖分子可能使用兩種方式來襲擊北非地區甚至是沙烏地阿拉伯的油田。一是像2001年9月11日那樣，讓飛機從客運模式轉換成具有巨大威力的制導導彈；另一種是利用飛機的民航標誌運載恐怖分子進入襲擊區域。美國官方還沒有正式承認這11架飛機失蹤，但據報導正努力尋找它們的下落。

2001年9月11日，基地組織對紐約世貿中心和華盛頓五角大樓發動恐怖襲擊；2012年9月11日，伊斯蘭武裝分子對美國駐利比亞班加西領事發動恐怖襲擊，造成4人喪生，其中包括美國大使史蒂文斯。
