馬航客機MH17在烏克蘭東部與俄羅斯邊境遭到飛彈擊落，機上298人無人生還。俄羅斯被國際社會譴責，西方國家要求俄羅斯政府能對烏東叛軍施壓，配合MH17墜毀失事的全面調查。

美國有線電視新聞網《CNN》報導，荷蘭總理魯特（Mark Rutte）表示他曾與俄羅斯總統普丁（Vladimir Putin）進行過一場「激烈對話」，提醒普丁他向世界展現想「認真協助」的機會正在逐漸消逝，並強硬地說：「他有最後一次機會，展現誠意協助」。

飛機墜毀事件發生後，普丁成為眾矢之的，把許多帳算在普丁頭上。不過對於國際的聯手施壓，普丁似乎沒有退讓跡象，否認與此事有任何牽連，撇清所有外界加諸於俄羅斯的罪名，普丁還呼籲對於這起墜機事件，能夠「徹底、客觀」地調查。
