香港佔中引發外媒關注，路透稱鎮暴警今天凌晨進逼追求民主的群眾，用警棍推擠驅散群眾，還發射催淚瓦斯，稱這是自前英國殖民地香港回歸中國以來，掀起最嚴重的動亂。
 
美國有線電視新聞網（CNN）也在首頁大篇幅報導事件，指出有在抗爭現場採訪的記者，遭到催淚瓦斯嗆到。影片顯示，當時CNN記者華森（Ivan Watson）連線報導時，香港警方突然施放催淚瓦斯，附近民眾紛紛走避，華森也趕快戴上面罩，但仍遭到瓦斯嗆到、不斷咳嗽，發出近乎嘔吐的聲音，怵目驚心過程全被攝影師捕捉下來。（林奐成╱綜合外電報導）
