〔自由時報記者黃博郎／官田報導〕台南市生態保育學會在父親節表揚彩鷸公鳥是「模範鳥父親」，鑑於台南市鳥遲未選拔公告，而原先台南縣鳥水雉和彩鷸一樣，都是父兼母職的「模範鳥父親」，特為水雉請命，希望水雉能隨縣市合併升格，成為台南市的市鳥。

台南市生態保育學會理事長邱仁武指出，水雉屬於「一妻多夫」制，主食浮葉上的昆蟲、蛹、小螺，也吃植物種子或嫩芽，每年四到九月為其繁殖季，築巢於浮葉植物上，主要在菱角葉上築巢，也可在芡實、印度莕菜、大萍上築巢，每窩四個蛋。雌鳥下完一窩蛋後，便會再找別的雄鳥再產一窩蛋，孵蛋帶雛的工作全由雄鳥負責，一個繁殖季一隻雌鳥可產十二窩蛋。

愛好生態攝影的李進裕說，水雉在幾十年前遍布台灣各地有浮葉植物的水塘、農田，十年前全台剩約五十隻，最近幾年復育有成，維持在三百至五百隻左右，主要集中在官田菱角田以及水雉生態教育園區，包括將軍、下營等全國各地偶見零星小族群。
