隨著花東鐵路電氣化,電聯車(Electric Multiple Unit, EMU)在台灣已成為主流,柴聯車(Diesel Multiple Unit, DMU)僅在南迴與部份支線仍使用。在低運量的情況下,柴聯車雖有車輛造價和運作成本較電聯車低的優勢,但轟隆隆的噪音振動與柴油廢氣排放顯然不符合當今的環保要求。儲電式獨立電源電聯車已開始英國與日本投入營運,燃料電池獨立電源電聯車也再加快發展腳步。
