美國國務院回應香港七一遊行表示，美國支持香港民主，並持續與港人對話，且相信經由全民普選產生的特首適法性將會擴大。

國務院發言人哈夫（Marie Harf）在例行簡報表示，美國支持香港既定的良好傳統，以及香港基本法的保障，包括國際認可的自由，諸如和平集會自由與言論自由，美方堅定支持香港依據基本法享有民主。

哈夫說，美方認為開放社會下的高度自治與依法治理，是香港穩定繁榮的必要條件，2017年香港特區行政長官選舉程序與細節仍在討論中，但此人如果經由全民普選產生，候選人能反映出選民意志，民眾可實在做出選擇，美方相信特首的適法性將會擴大。
