席維斯史特龍說，自從以《洛基》一炮而紅之後，許多製片與導演都曾詢問過他和勞勃狄尼洛，可否「拳擊相向」，雖然兩人有意願但卻永遠湊不到一塊，想不到卻在30年後完成夢想。

為了這場30年前就應該拍攝的拳擊電影《進擊的大佬》，兩人接受最嚴格的訓練，狄尼洛指定要史特龍的個人健身教練，展開一連串嚴苛的魔鬼訓練，史特龍則表示：「我用的是過去訓練職業拳擊手的方式！例如翻動大型卡車輪胎增加腰力，拉大卡車強健腿力與心血管的強度，甚至將拳頭泡馬尿增加皮膚厚度。」

《進擊的大佬》拳擊賽整個拍攝過程，完全交由史特龍一手負責，而且兩人在最後高潮的對決賽中，全場都由史特龍與狄尼洛親自上陣，堅持不用替身。

除了威風八面的拳擊訓練外，《進擊的大佬》也真實反映出老拳擊手的窘境，透過狄尼洛與史特龍的相互調侃，非常逗趣。
