美國媒體報導，在美國總統歐巴馬向國會尋求授權對極端組織伊斯蘭國（Islamic State)宣戰後，超過4000名美軍部隊將攜帶重型裝備啟程前往科威特，成為美國駐中東最強大的地面部隊。

美聯社報導，派駐科威特的4000名美軍，不少曾經參與過伊拉克戰事，身經百戰，出發前更曾接受超過一年的訓練。

歐巴馬11日向國會尋求授權對伊斯蘭國宣戰，但是會排除介入伊拉克或阿富汗般參與中東戰鬥行動，過去3年來，美軍一直要求考慮派出地面部隊對付伊斯蘭國極端分子，以及任何與伊斯蘭國有密切關係的極端伊斯蘭組織。

2014年6月，伊斯蘭國在敘利亞與伊拉克邊境宣布建政後，勢力範圍持續擴大，沙烏地阿拉伯和科威特被認為是伊斯蘭國未來5年擴張領地的首選目標。
