日本被認為是AV大國，但從古代開始，日本民間就存在許多春畫，其精彩程度不輸今日的SOD。

日本《產經新聞》上周刊登一系列於1720~1760年間的春畫，內容露骨程度直逼今日AV，這些春畫的「AV女優」和「AV男優」，其背景從王公貴族到平民百姓、攤販走卒等都有，除了描繪每個人的性格，連做愛場景都很「豐富」，包括皇宮、馬車等都被畫入。

不過，報導也指出，當時春畫盛行的原因，應是為了批判政府，但又不敢直言，因此把憤怒轉化為春畫寓意。隨後政府展開大力「掃黃」，有很多浮世繪畫師被抓，或遭到流放，儘管如此，春畫和春書仍如雨後春筍般地出現。（施旖婕／綜合外電報導）
